Is Forex Trading Legal in Zambia? (2026) — Rateweb

Short answer: individuals aren't prosecuted for trading forex online, but Zambia has no licensing regime for retail forex/CFD brokers — the platforms serving Zambians are regulated offshore, and both the SEC Zambia and the Bank of Zambia have cautioned the public about unlicensed investment schemes riding the forex label.

Who regulates what

  • The Bank of Zambia supervises the FX market and licenses bureaux de change — physical exchange, not online platforms.
  • The SEC Zambia regulates securities and LuSE-market brokers; it has not licensed retail CFD platforms.
  • Your counterparty protection is whichever offshore regulator licenses the entity you sign with (FCA, CySEC, FSCA…).

What that means in practice

  1. Verify the offshore licence on the regulator's own register, and confirm which entity onboards Zambian clients — often an offshore arm, not the tier-1 licence in the adverts.
  2. Fund traceably in your own name, through the broker's official cashier — "agents" and WhatsApp deposit-handlers are where the money disappears.
  3. Assume no local recourse — complaints go to a foreign regulator.
  4. Refuse "trade for you" schemes. Guaranteed-return forex clubs are the region's most repeated scam, and the label survives every collapse.

Risk warning: forex and CFD trading is high-risk; most retail traders lose money — and the kwacha's own swings tempt people into exactly the leveraged bets that end badly. Never trade money you can't afford to lose.

The regulated alternatives

If the appeal of forex is growth, there are far better-supervised ways to get it in Zambia: government securities (see how to buy treasury bills and government bonds), licensed bank deposits — protected as explained in is your money safe in a Zambian bank? — and LuSE-listed investments through SEC-licensed brokers. Our full savings and investing ladder walks through how to sequence them.

Frequently asked questions

Can I fund a broker with mobile money? Some route MoMo/Airtel payments; the traceability rule matters more than convenience.

Are trading profits taxed? Don't assume they're tax-free. Income is income as far as the ZRA is concerned, and the safe planning assumption is that trading gains are taxable — but exactly how a retail trader's profits are treated is far less settled than PAYE or VAT. If you're trading at any meaningful size, get your position confirmed by the ZRA or a tax practitioner rather than guessing.

Will Zambia license brokers eventually? Kenya already does next door; if the SEC moves, this page changes — our pages carry verification dates for exactly that reason.
