Is Cryptocurrency Legal in Zambia? (2026) — Rateweb

Short answer: buying, selling and holding cryptocurrency is not illegal in Zambia — but it is not legal tender, and the regulatory framework is still being built. That in-between status is exactly what you need to understand before you put money in.

Is Cryptocurrency Legal in Zambia? (2026)

Where the law stands

  • Not legal tender. No shop is obliged to accept crypto, and the kwacha remains the only legal tender. The Bank of Zambia (BoZ) has publicly warned that cryptocurrencies are not regulated as money and that people who use them carry the risk themselves.
  • Regulation is coming. Zambia has been moving deliberately toward a formal framework — the authorities have signalled that virtual assets will be brought under supervision, with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) of Zambia expected to oversee exchanges/virtual-asset service providers.
  • Tax. How crypto gains are taxed in Zambia is not settled the way PAYE or VAT are. Don't assume gains are tax-free.

If you decide to buy

Treat it as a high-risk holding — money you can afford to lose entirely.

  • Use platforms that serve Zambia properly. Exchanges with ZMW on-ramps via mobile money and bank transfer (for example Yellow Card, and Binance's P2P marketplace) are the common routes. See our crypto exchanges comparison.
  • Guard against P2P scams. On peer-to-peer marketplaces, only release crypto once payment has truly cleared in your account — reversible or fake payment confirmations are the classic fraud. Use the platform's escrow, never move off-platform.
  • Secure your coins. Enable two-factor authentication, and for anything meaningful, move it to a wallet you control.

The honest bottom line

Crypto in Zambia sits in a grey-but-tolerated zone that is slowly being regulated. It is legal to hold, genuinely risky in price, and only lightly supervised for now. If you want growth with far less risk, compare government securities and savings and fixed deposits first — and only then decide whether a small, losable amount of crypto fits.
