NAPSA (5% employee contribution, capped at K1,861.80/month) and NHIMA (1%) are deducted separately and do not reduce the PAYE base. An estimate — confirm with the ZRA or a tax practitioner.

The bands

Zambian PAYE runs on monthly bands, and the first slice is free of tax:

Monthly taxable payRate on that slice
First K5,1000%
Next K2,000 (to K7,100)20%
Next K2,100 (to K9,200)30%
Above K9,20037%

The bands are narrow, so the top rate arrives sooner than in many systems — but they are progressive, meaning only the slice inside each band is taxed at that rate. Your effective rate is always lower than 37%, and a raise can never reduce your take-home pay.

The two contributions alongside PAYE

NAPSA — 5%, and it caps

The employee contribution to the National Pension Scheme Authority is 5% of earnings, up to a ceiling of K37,236 a month. Above that ceiling the contribution stops rising, so higher earners pay the same fixed maximum. Your employer contributes a matching share.

Two things worth doing, and almost nobody does either:

  • Request your NAPSA statement and check it against the jobs you have actually held. Gaps — deductions never remitted, or periods recorded under wrong details — are fixable now and very hard to fix at retirement;
  • Treat it as a floor. A capped contribution buys a capped benefit, so for most earners NAPSA will not fund retirement on its own. Build above it — see the retirement calculator.

NHIMA — 1%

The National Health Insurance Management Authority levy is 1% of earnings, matched by your employer. It funds access to the national health insurance scheme — worth knowing what it entitles you to, since many contributors never find out.

Checking your payslip

  1. Run your gross through the calculator and compare each line;
  2. Confirm NAPSA against the K37,236 ceiling if you earn above it — the contribution should stop rising;
  3. Confirm NHIMA at 1%;
  4. Identify every other deduction and confirm you agreed to it in writing;
  5. Keep your payslips — they are required for loan applications and are your evidence in any dispute.

What else takes a share

VAT is 16% on most goods and services — see the VAT calculator for how to add and remove it correctly, including the common error of subtracting 16% from a VAT-inclusive price.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my PAYE different from this estimate?

Usually allowances or benefits treated differently, or a pension arrangement affecting the taxable base. Check each line and query differences with payroll in writing.

Does NAPSA reduce my taxable pay?

Treatment depends on the arrangement — the calculator applies the standard approach. Confirm your specific position with ZRA or a registered practitioner.

Why does my colleague pay the same NAPSA as me?

Because it caps at K37,236 of monthly earnings. Everyone above that ceiling contributes the same maximum.

Should I refuse a raise to stay in a lower band?

Never. Only the additional slice is taxed at the higher rate.

How do I check my NAPSA record?

Request a statement directly from NAPSA using your identification, and do it after every job change rather than waiting.
